Poisonous Apples
Yes, it does sound like Snow White, but this is true, apples are poisonous. Or rather, apple seeds. One of the fruits most commonly eaten, it is not widely known that apple seeds are poisonous. Apple seeds contain cyanogenic glycosides. Small amounts of cyanide compounds can be detoxified by out body. However, larger amounts will have effects on us. Children are pets are more vulnerable to it compared to adults.
Mild poisoning will cause headache, dizziness, confusion, anxiety and vomiting. Severe cases of poisoning will lead to breathing difficulties, increased blood pressure and heart rate, as well as kidney failure. It should strike you now that this is potentially lethal for us. These are only the symptoms, the reactions to these symptoms can only get worse. Reactions range from comas, convulsions, to death from respiratory arrest.
Not only apple seeds are poisonous. Cherry pits are also known to contain cyanide compounds. Chewing on the seeds is known to make absorption of the cyanogenic glycosides higher, and would lead to more cyanide being absorbed.
Reminder: This is NOT written so that you can use this as an excuse to not eat fruits. You are eating the FLESH, not the SEEDS. Well, if you are eating the seeds, something is really wrong with you.
